Gynecomastia, which means breast enlargement in men, is a condition that can be seen in 60% of men in adolescence due to hormonal changes, and in older men due to hormonal disorders and obesity. Adolescent gynecomastia mostly resolves spontaneously after 17-18 years of age.
Just like in women, breast tissue in men is made up of fat and mammary glands. In men, gynecomastia occurs with an increase in the mammary glands and breast adipose tissue. Today, one out of every 5 men has this problem.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to treat gynecomastia, which can bring many psychological problems, with medication. Gynecomastia in adults can have more than one cause. One of them is the enlargement of the mammary glands due to hormonal disorders. In this case, first of all, the cause of the hormonal disorder should be investigated and treated. Another reason is excess weight. The problem in breast enlargement due to obesity is the increase in the amount of fat in the breast rather than the mammary glands.
The surgeries are performed under general anesthesia and take about 1 hour. While excess fat tissue can be removed by liposuction in weight-related gynecomastia, in cases where the mammary glands enlarge, the gland tissue must be cut. In both cases, you need to use a corset for 4 weeks after surgery to reduce edema and support the skin. The recovery process is not a very painful operation, you can return to your normal life in 2-3 days.
